Wed / Thurs., Feb 2 & 3, 2011

In class:

  • Returned Quizzes - Moles & Mass
  • Reviewed Empirical & Molecular Formula Problems
  • Discussed Chromatography separation techniques w/ paper chromatography mini-lab activity
Homework:
  • Percent Composition & Molecular Formula WS (below)

Please note that questions 1 & 2 are incorrect.  Both problems were percent composition problems, but I treated them like empirical formula problems.  You should have gotten the correct answer by multiplying the % composition of each element by the total mass of the sample.  For example, A 2.786 gram sample of a substance containing 66.5% C would be:
(0.665) x (2.786 g) = 1.85 grams of Carbon.

NOTE:
  • Percent Composition Labs are due Friday 2/4
  • Quiz covering percent composition problems, empirical & molecular formula problems
